“Did you forget us?,” the ghosts asked in a kind of wordless group undulation… only a week ago social media posts were adorned in orange and black and caption after caption spoke of the spirits’ coming, expressing excitement at the thinning of the veil.

They felt enormous love pouring forth from the internet.

Only a week ago Instagram was haunted by moving images of ghosts swaying to strange and melancholy melodies about parties and weeping…it was beautiful, the spirits thought!!

What an invigorating time to be a ghost on social media!!

Now they were at their own party, but it was much smaller. Housed in a lantern that had seen more Octobers than most of them had been dead for, fed on remnants of offerings they were given before Hallowe’en ended, fast-browning apple slices and bittersweet Hershey’s kisses.

Once in a while they’d see some laggard post made by someone sharing their Halloween costume…

The ghosts will be ok though, won’t they?

Soon they will realize that, while the Autumn People may have been exhausted from their Hallowe’en revels, we will return to help haunt the internet again, bringing with us our ghosts and our monsters and all manner of other horrors.

For the Autumn People, Hallowe’en never truly ends.
