What it is to be a Jack-O-Lantern in the days and weeks following that magical night of Hallowe’en? It’s a time of of change, of drying up, of seepage, of pouring out. The timeline is different for every gourd, but in the end the story is the same.

Losing liquids is painful, but being forgotten is worse…That’s why every gourd prefers to be given a face. To be the center of the celebration, to be remembered in the hearts of children even as they themselves begin to grow and sag and lose their forms...Being lit from within and worshiped by crowds of eager Trick-or-Treaters is a gourd’s true best destiny.

These things are worth the the pain of the Quickening…

Decay comes quicker for Jack-O-Lanterns, but they much prefer their short lives to those of the gourds who are forced to sit on doorsteps next to sad, single cornstalks for months before being unceremoniously tossed into the trash for being seasonally inappropriate. Even worse is never getting to leave the patch, to rot on the vine barely a foot from the spot where you began…

Being a gourd is hard, so please, next time you see a sagging, rotten Jack-O-Lantern on someone else’s stoop, give them a quick thanks and tell them how much their service has meant to you…

And let your own gourds know that they’ll always be remembered…
