You lay awake and stare at the stars through the transparent top of your tent, somewhat unsettled but with no clear and convenient reason why. Is it the simple fact that your city-dwelling nature makes outdoor sleeping feel unnatural?

Or is it something else?

As you contemplate your discomfort you notice the brightness of the stars sans light pollution. It’s undeniably beautiful, and you think that maybe the whim that led you to camp in Yosemite wasn’t such a bad one after all.

Then a quiet shuffle in the distance puts you on edge…

but it’s probably just a raccoon.

But you hear it again. Louder. Closer.

Breathlessly you’re up, on your knees peering through an unzipped slit. All you can see are legs, spastically moving forward, shuffling, bending at odd angles. Watching them move through the trees, dream-like and strange, you don’t feel terror, just awe.

And you’re not even sure how to feel as a sudden lurch puts them on the path of your tent…
