The end is quick for most Jack-O-Lanterns…
There is a seeping in one’s sides, a sagging that makes smile and sneer alike fade into ambiguity.
A few precious early November days inhaling crisp air and spiced-leaf smells before one falls into oblivion…. a pile of mush and old tea lights on the pavement to be unceremoniously shoveled into the compost bin.

But for Jack-O-Lanterns in colder climes, oblivion takes longer.
Sagging jowls filling with liquid freeze. The process of decay halts, and carved faces enter a kind of purgatorial period, suspended between life and death.

Even in this limbo, there are a few who find beauty in the Rotting, who think that the fungus encroaching upon your features gives you added character and distinguishment.
But few are so kind as the one you met the other day: the girl who looked into your eyes and saw exactly how you felt despite what the mold and the melting and the frost had done to your features.
You knew she understood because she came back the next day, warmth and color in her arms.
It was the best and only gift you’d ever receive.
